What is Mindfulness?

Mindfulness is being present and aware of our thoughts, feeling & sensations. “The mind is an instrument. Learn to be its master, not its slave,” Remez Sasson.

When we are mindless, we are on ‘autopilot.’ We find ourselves struggling for peace of mind, and it becomes difficult to get stuff done. When I was in the beginning stages of opening the coffee shop, I was anxiety- and stress-ridden. My body was out of balance. There was a traffic jam in my head. I wasn’t confident in my decisions, and I was left with a serious case of ‘WAKE THE F*** UP!’ I knew running a business did not have to be like this.

Living my dream without mountains of stress became my new focus. Being present with my thoughts allowed me to make better decisions, and communicate more effectively with customers and employees. I still struggle. Sometimes its feels like I have a BIG decision, and I don’t want to make the wrong choice.  But with mindfulness, I am I am able to breath and think clearly. As Eckhart Tolle said, “Rather than being your thoughts and emotions, be the awareness behind them.”

I now am more proactive, rather than reactive. I feel confident in my decision-making. I focus on the task at hand. I am in control, for me that’s HUGE. As business owners, we tend to be perfectionists. We obsess over the details. We want control every situation, and our brains never stop. But we can function better if we stop, breath, and allow ourselves to exist in the present moment. Once we discover the source of the anxiety, it loses its hold over us. We deserve a peaceful mind, so that we may fulfil our dreams.
